Manipal: Commuters unhappy with the slow pace of road work

Mangalore Today News Network

Manipal:  September 19, 2015: The potholes on the National Highway 169A, running from Manipal to Udupi, especially the ghat stretch near Manipal, will be filled up, however the commuters are angry with the slow pace of road work.

Since monsoon was on, only temporary filling was being done. “We will require completely dry and sunny days to undertake repairs of permanent nature,” Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal told sources.

Busy route

The Udupi-Manipal Road, now a part of NH169A, is the busiest in the city as it connects the tourist spot of Malpe and the pilgrim centre of Udupi with the educational hub of Manipal. The Udupi-Manipal Road, including the ghat stretch, was widened a few years ago. The ghat stretch is not as wide as the rest of the road.

P. Yuvaraj, President of Udupi City Municipal Council, said, “The road does not come under the CMC. But we have put pressure on the Department to take up the work of filling the potholes. I have also brought this matter to the notice of Shobha Karandlaje, MP, so that she can put up some pressure on the Union Ministry of Surface Transport in Delhi to repair the NH169A in the city.”

“The Department has assured me that it will also undertake repairs of the road at Syndicate Circle, Tiger Circle and also at the MIT Junction,” he said.
