Mangaluru, 11 March, 2017: Egged on by the clean sweep achieved by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarkhand state assembly elections, local BJP leaders and party workers lost no time in organizing a celebration in front of the party office near PVS circle in the city.
A large group of excited party workers led by veteran leaders former deputy speaker Yogesh Bhat and MLC Monappa Bhandary gathered in front of the office and cheered the victory with bursting of crackers and distribution of sweets.
A large 3D cutout of Prime Minister Narendra Modi dominated the scene and some excited party workers even gestured as if feeding the idol with sweets.
This election victory clears proves that BJP commands the support of all sections of society, Monappa Banhadary observed.
Yogesh Bhat gave the credit of the victory to Modi. "Modi wave which began with 2014 Lok Sabha elections is continuing in 2017 and the momentum will go beyond the 2019 general elections," he said.
The current round of assembly elections of five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur – have been fought by the party under the leadership of Party President Amit Shah with campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The outcome of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarkhand are considered to be crucial due to their sheer size and strategic positioning in Hindi belt.
There was widespread speculation that the saffron party may suffer negative backlash of Modi’s controversial Demonetisation move, which resulted in scrapping of high value currency.
However most exit polls had indicated that BJP would make a landslide win in the two states. As per current position, Congress has won the Punjab assembly and Manipur and Goa assembly counting process is still on.
