Mangaluru, April 8, 2018: Unexpected downpour of rain disrupted normal life in the city today, while also providing some relief from the scorching heat of summer.
The city which has been experiencing extreme temperatures in the last few weeks saw a sudden darkening of the skies and rain followed a few minutes past 4 p.m. The showers lasted for a little over one hour and completely transformed the landscape. Construction sites and many places where road work was going on were the worst hit due as the rain made a mess of the place.
At Derlakatte near Nitte Hospital, the road had turned into a slush field and vehicles found it difficult to move due to skidding of the tyres. Some small vehicles were stuck and traffic was diverted through Madoor road.
Despite the brief disruption to normal life, the rains gave the city roads a much needed wash. The air too was dense with pleasant petrichor – the typical scent after the first rains – which had an uplifting effect on everyone’s mood.
It remains to be seen if this was a one off phenomenon or if it will continue to rain for few more days. The regular monsoon is not expected until the first week of June.
