According to highly placed police sources, there was first an altercation between two groups over a minor incident of negligent driving. This happened close to a bar in Karangalpady area. One group comprised of foreign nationals who are students in a local college. The other group was made up of local youth. After hurling abuses at each other, the local youth who were few in number assaulted the foreign nationals and the foreigners fled to their accommodation at Veera Palace.

Subsequently, all of a sudden the local youth regrouped into a bigger force and trespassed into the apartment complex for a second round of assault. In the ensuing fight, the foreign nationals retaliated with knife and four of the local youth suffered stab injuries, police sources explained.

Soon afterwards, the police intervened and arrested six residents of the flat. Apart from the five Syrian and African students, the sixth person arrested is said to be a Keralite student. It is believed that he is a roommate of the foreign students and he had turned up to see what was happening after he heard noises. He too was arrested for being present on the crime scene. “This is a serious case of assault. In a mob incident, all persons present are held responsible. Hence we have rounded up all the persons involved and investigation is continuing,” said a senior police officer who is monitoring the case.

On investigation it was also found that one of foreign nationals was staying overtime in India even after lapse of visa and passport. The four people injured with stab injuries have been admitted to two private hospitals in the city and two of them have undergone minor surgeries on abdomen and chest. All are out of danger, the hospital sources have informed.

Barke Police have filed an FIR naming the six as accused under various sections including IPC 307 for attempt to murder.
