Mangaluru, Feb 11, 2015: The National Disaster Reduction Day was observed at the SP Office Grounds here on February 11, Wednesday under the joint aegis of the District Fire Service Department and the District Home Guards. Earlier, Fr Valerian D’Souza, Parish Priest of Milagres Church flagged off a rally from the Church premises to the programme venue.
In his address, City Police commissioner S Murugan said disasters can be reduced when there is active public participation and co-operation with the Police, Fire Service Departments and Home Guards. There is a need for greater awareness in this regard, the Police Commissioner said and added that students can play a major role in this regard.
Dr Murali Mohan Chuntar, District Commandant of Home Guards who presided over the function said Mangaluru which has a number of industries should always be on the guard. There is need to educate society on disaster management and reduction, he said.
Chief Fire Officer HS Varadaraj gave information on the ways to handle disasters at home, work place and on roads.
The second-in-command of the Home Guards’ Mohammed Ismail, Additional DC Srinivas Prabhu and others were present.
The Fire Service Department presented a mock drill.
