Mangaluru, Sep 27, 2018: A major fire is raging in Felix Pai Bazar on GHS Road and it has disrupted traffic on this busy street. The building housing Kamath and Co and Selection Centre is engulfed in thick smoke and fire department is trying hard to bring the flames under control. The building is situated adjacent to Janata Bazaar and opposite the old Ganesh Bazaar.
The fire began in the Selection Centre portion of the building. Electrical short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the mishap. The building has been undergoing renovation since last few weeks. Selection Centre is a readymade garment showroom, while Kamath & Co., is a famous general store.
Felix Pai Bazar is one of the first and oldest surviving shopping centers of the city, being nearly a century old. It comprises of a network of interconnected blocks. If the fire is not controlled, there is risk of it spreading further as the bazaar is built with a lot of wood work.
Update: Fire department managed to douse the fire by 11:30 a.m. The fire was first noticed about 10:15 a.m. Several fire tenders were pressed into service and the firemen very efficiently managed to bring the fire under control with minimum damage to the property. Thankfully no one is reported to have been hurt or injured in the mishap.
Ground Floor portion of Selection Centre shop was seen to be completely gutted, while Kamath & Co portion did not suffer any visible damage.
Police Commissioner T. R. Suresh, MCC commisioner Mohammed Nazeer have visited the spot to take stock of the situation.
