Mangaluru MLA Lobo initiates to construct skywalks near Town hall

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Aug 6,2016: MCC, Mangaluru City Corporation in association with Coastal Development Authority will work towards constructing a skywalk near Town Hall, in Hampankatta. A decision to this effect has been taken with a view to ensure free flow of traffic, which is impeded on account of pedestrians striving to cross the four lane road near Town Hall, noted Mangaluru City South MLA J R Lobo, after inspecting the potential site where the proposed state-of-the-art skywalk is proposed to be set up.

Mangaluru MLA LoboThe sky walk will connect the side of Town Hall with the road leading to Mangaluru Central Railway station and will provide ease and comfort to those  wanting to cross the road. A plan is also underway to provide escalator to enable the aged and infirm cross the skywalk, the MLA said adding there are similar skywalks already functional in New Delhi. "It is good to go in for a similar type of skywalk for the city," Lobo said adding that the Authority will take up the project.

The CDA has already sanctioned Rs 78 lakh for the ambitious project, Lobo said adding the Mangaluru City Corporation too has decided to pitch in with 5% of the project cost, for which it has placed an agenda before the council for approval. Total cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 1.50-crore, MLA said efforts will be made to raise the shortfall from various sources. Experts from Nirmithi Kendra will contact agencies/people who have expertise in this regard, Lobo said.

Noting that skywalk sans escalators have been failures in the national and state capital where they have been installed, he said has seen skywalks in Delhi with escalators being used by people. "Most people have a dislike to climb stairs while not so much to alight steps," he said adding escalators on either side of the skywalk will cost around Rs 35 lakh each and the fabrication and other aspects of setting up the skywalk will come to around Rs 1.5-crore, he explained.
