Mangaluru, Aug 21, 2015: Former chief minister Devaraj Urs had played a pivotal role in securing social justice to the deprived sections of the society, said DK District in-charge Minister B Ramanatha Rai.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Birth Centenary celebrations of Urs at the Netravathi Auditorium of DK ZP on August 20, Thursday under the aegis of the DK District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and the Backward Classes Welfare Department.
Continuing, Rai also spoke about the contributions of Late Urs towards abolition of bonded labour system, implementation of 20 Point Programme and also in ensuring that DK district achieved total literacy.
DK ZP Chief Asha Timmappa Gowda and other dignitaries present garlanded the portrait of late Urs and paid floral tributes to him.
Deputy Commissioner a b Ibrahim, ZP CEO PI Sreevidya, JR Lobo, MLA of Mangaluru South, Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy President Mohammad Haneef, DK ZP Standing Committee on Social Justice President Meenakshi Manjunath, Konkani Sahitya Academy President Roy Castelino and others were present.
Dr K Abhaya Kumar of the SVP Kannada Study Institute of Mangalore University gave a special lecture on the occasion.
