Mangaluru, Feb 27, 2016: Creative Science Models, Innovative poster designs, test of Science General knowledge and voicing of opinions on science for national development, documentary presentations of advancement in science among other activities marked the CIL Science Fest 2016 organised by Centre for Integrated Learning and Lions Club Mangalore at the Lions Seva Mandir in the city on Saturday. The day-long inter-school science event was conducted to mark the National Science Day.

Inaugurating the event, Dr. R Shankar, Professor at the Department of Marine Geology of Mangalore University, exhorted the high school students to question the beliefs and practices so as to differentiate science from superstition. He lamented that there were so many superstitious practices which is proving detrimental to the progress of the society. Children should realize the fact that a nation’s development significantly depended on scientific thought process and technological advancement, he added.

In view of encouraging teachers and thus inspiring the students to inculcate scientific temper and critical thinking, science teacher of Sri Venkatrama Higher Primary School, Kulai in the outskirts of the city, was felicitated on the occasion for his contribution to the field of science education.

Various competitive events like Science Model Making, Poster Design, Elocution and Quiz were organized to mark the day with the theme “Raising Awareness among Public on Appreciating Science in Nation Building”, as announced by the Department of Science and Technology this year to mark the National Science Day.

Principal of Sharada Pre-University College, Dr. Sripathi Rao distributed the prizes and delivered the valedictory address. Executive Director of Centre for Integrated Learning, Sachitha Nandagopal, Vice President of Lions Club Mangalore Venkatesh Baliga, Leo Club President Ahima Shetty among others were present on the occasion.
