Mangaluru, 31, March 2017: A gang of burglars made a daring attempt to rob a house situated in Kodialguthu East last night. The two bedroom stand alone house belonging to Raghuveera Alva is located in a side lane in the locality. Alva, a retired manager of Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers, his wife and son were in the house at the time.
The thieves broke into the house at about 3 a.m. last night when all the residents were fast asleep. They cut through a window grill to gain access into the kitchen. One member is suspected to have sneaked in through this vent and allowed the other gang members into the house through the front door.
They first bolted the bedroom where the Alva couple were sleeping from the outside and began to rummage through the living room. The son who was sleeping in an adjacent room woke up when he heard some noise. The thieves who were alerted to this escaped using the front door.
As their attempt was foiled midway, the thieves could decamp with only a mobile phone and a few hundred rupees of loose cash which was lying idle on the dining table. The gang is suspected to comprise 2-4 members, though no member of the house saw anyone in person.
The thieves had removed the SIM card from the handset and left it behind to evade tracking, Mrs Alva said. “I am very careful and latch all windows at night. Still the thieves managed to enter the house,” she said. Though several houses were situated adjacent, it is surprising that no one heard any noise.
The family which was shocked by the incident has reported the theft attempt to the police. Prakash K., ASI (Crime) of Barke police station is investigating the case under the directions of Udaya Nayak, ACP (Crime). Dog squad was pressed into service and enquiries are going on.
