Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2015 : The two day Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Samaroh-2015, which is aimed at enriching literary experiences in Konkani  was inaugurated by Dr. Udaya Narayana Singh, Chair, Centre for Endangered Languages, Vishwa Bharathi, Shanti Niketan, West Bengal at a function held at World Konkani Centre at Shaktinagar on November 5, Thursday. The festival is organised by the World Konkani Centre in association with Department of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka and Department of English, Goa University.

In his inaugural address, Dr Udaya Narayana Singh said all languages which exist on this earth are equally good and respectable. Literature has the power to teach us to respect each other, he said. It is the writers who add weightage to a language through their works, he added.

He was also all praise for the Konkani Centre for its noble deed of providing scholarships to students  and helping them build bright careers for themselves.

Prof. K Bhyrappa, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University who presided over the function  said the   Konkani Study Chair in Mangalore University  was one of the  biggest chairs out of the chairs of 17 languages instituted in the University. He also informed that the state government has  allocated Rs 2 crore to the Konkani Chair.

Recalling the history of Konkani language dating back to nearly eight centuries, he  also sought the guidance of Basti Vaman Shenoy of World Konkani Centre and Dr Udaya Narayana towards the development of Konkani study chair.

Responding to the appeal of the Vice Chancellor Basti Vaman Shenoy said the Centre was willing to sign an MoU with Mangalore University as done in the case of Goa University.

Dr Kiran Budkuley, Dean, Faculty of Languages, Goa University, spoke as a chief guest.


P Ramesh Pai,President of Kerala Konkani Academy, B Prabhakar Prabhu,Secretary of  World Konkani Centre and many other dignitaries were present.
