Mangalore wears festive look ahead of Eid and Ganesh Chaturthi

Mangalore, August 30, 2011: The Hindu and Muslim communities of Mangalore are busy making preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi and Eid, respectively. While Muslims will celebrate Eid on Aug 31 Wednesday if they sight the moon on the night of Tuesday, Hindus will celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi on Thursday.

The Hindu and Islamic festivals seem to play musical chairs on their respective calendars. Festivals like Eid and Ganesh Chaturthi are falling on a day difference; in 2010 both festivals were celebrated on same day.

City markets are also on shopping spree with people hanging from one shop to the other busy preparing for their celebrations. Jawed, an elderly devotee finds it wonderful to the second year continuation of the three festivals falling on the same day. “Almighty is doing it all making us realise that we are all one. The markets are also buys and it’s difficult to find who is shopping for which festival,” said Jawed.

The month long prayers of devotees will finally end as they see the holy moon on Wednesday. The mosques of the city have appealed people to see the moon and indulge into celebrations.

Priests of the temple are also happy with second time coincidence and said that Ganesh Chaturthi has a great importance in Hindu mythology but Eid falling one day before makes the day even more important.

City markets are also heavily crowded with people of different religious beliefs busy with their shopping. Clothing stores, sweets shops, grocery shops all were filled with customers buying their lists, some for Eid, some for Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi.
