Mangalore,  August 5: Legendary cricket player Mr. Ganapathy Rao died at the ripe old age of 90 in Mangalore. He is survived by five daughters and four sons.


Mr. Rao is widely acclaimed for his love for cricket. Even at the age of 75, he coached young people at 6 a.m. at Nehru Maidan dressed fully in white.

Mr. Rao’s cricket career commenced in 1956, when he scored 125 runs in a match played in Mangalore against Kerala. He has known great bowlers, batsmen, keepers, and fieldsmen such as Frank Worrel, Subhash Gupta, Ray Illingworth, Madhav Manthri, Graeme Walcott, Everton Weeks, and others. He was the first Mangalorean cricketers to make it to the national level though he did not make it to the national eleven.
