Mangalore July 13: MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that he will urge the central government to create a railway division for Mangalore during an interactive session held at the office of the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on July 13, Tuesday. Mangalore, which currently belongs to the Palghat division, is being treated in an unjust manner, he added.

Stating that the railways are always taken for granted, the MP said that public awareness regarding better railway facilities should be created. He also voiced his opinion that train journeys are preferable to bus journeys because they are shorter and faster.

Opposing projects such as MSEZ, Mr. Kateel said that he is against such development. He said that MSEZ does not even need 1,800 acres of the acquired land. Speaking in favor of small-scale industries over large-scale ones, he said that a majority of the people in the twin districts depend upon agriculture for a living.

The MP disclosed his plans to form a research team of 25 industrialists, economists, environmentalists, journalists, and others to study the sustaining power of industries in Mangalore, adding that the team will have to conduct a study for two years before it can submit a report.

Mr. Kateel also disclosed that Rs. 45 crore has been earmarked for the creation of drinking water facilities in the district and that a project to construct a new vented dam has been launched. Condemning the presence of a tollgate within the limits of the corporation, he promised to check into the matter. He also informed that the foundation stones for the Jeppu Bappal over bridge, the Padil over bridge, and the Mani – Mysore road will be laid soon.
