Mangalore artists protest against injustice through paintings

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 19: A group of 25 artists of Mangalore participated in a “Kuncha Kahale,” during which they painted pictures depicting the horrors of irresponsible industrialization in the district on a 39x3 canvas. Artist William Pais clarified that they were not against development, but only against the illegal and forcible eviction of farmers from their fertile agricultural land. Citing the example of Gregory Patrao, who was recently evicted from his agricultural land to facilitate MRPL’s expansion activities, he said that such exploitation is threatening to all the citizens.

Director of Hasta Art Gallery Nemiraj Shetty, who also participated in the protest, said that artists cannot protest as others do in front of the DC’s office, owing to which they have chosen to protest by painting pictures on canvas. He urged people to protest in a way convenient to them to ensure justice for all.

Mr. Pais told reporters that the artists planned to express support to Gregory Patrao by submitting the painting to the DC’s office.

Prominent city artists such as Rajendra Kedige, Nemiraj Shetty, Ganesh Somayaji, Santhosh Andrade, Dinesh Holla, Wilson Kayyar, Jeevan Salian, Vasanth Rao, Reshma Shetty, Rama Naik, Sapna Noronha, Ravi M. R., and Jeevan Kadri participated in this unique painting protest against exploitation and injustice.
