Dr. B. M. Ravindra, the deputy director of the department of mines and geology, informed media persons that Mangalore has a very stable structure with a laterite top covering hard and fresh granite rocks that will remain unaffected even in case of a moderate scale-2 earthquake. He added that the recent CNN-IBN reports on the stability of the Mangalore Airport are exaggerated.

Regarding the quarries in Adyapadi village, he said that they are located at a reasonable distance of 300m – 400m away from the southeast of the airport. Moreover, laterite is a superficial covering placed on top of hard and resilient granite rocks. No explosives are used to extract the laterite stones since they are soft enough to be removed with a cutting machine and cut into blocks with blades.

Extraction of laterite blocks does not lead to landslides, he confirmed. Land slides in the certain parts of coastal Karnataka take place under special conditions and have been observed in Kadawada, Kettikal, Neriya, or Eliyarapadavu. Such geo environmental conditions responsible for landslides are not found in the Bajpe - Adyapadi region.

Two old granite quarries are located at a distance of 1km from the airport in Karambar village. They have been in existence since the past 30 years and have not caused any harm to the surrounding environment. Moreover, the distance between the airport and these granite quarries is huge, owing to which the quarries cannot cause harm to the stable structure of the Bajpe Airport, he clarified.
