Mangalore University approves Tulu courses from next year

Mangalore, Sep 30, 2011 : A number of issues were discussed during the Mangalore University Academic Council meeting held in the Senate Hall yesterday.

Tulu courses


It was decided that Tulu certificate, diploma, and post graduate diploma courses will be held in the colleges coming under Mangalore University from the following academic year.

 

universityDuring the meeting, the council passed a draft regulation for the introduction of Tulu courses in the university and colleges affiliated to it. The university had already done this earlier, but this time, it has formed a separate draft regulation for the introduction of these courses.

Speaking at the meeting, Mangalore University VC Prof. T. C. Shivashankara Murthy said that the syllabus has already been prepared by experts and that the syllabus committee is headed by Dr. Abhay Kumar, the chairman of the Mangalore University Kannada Department.

The statute will be forwarded to Governor H. R. Bharadwaj for his approval after being passed in the Syndicate meeting held the following month.

Funds for SC/ST development

The state government has earmarked Rs. 1.45 crore for the benefit of SC/ST students. Revealing this information at the meeting, the VC said that the grant, which is usually given to universities in backward districts, has been given to Mangalore University after nearly 30 years. He said that the government has released half the funds already.

Permanent affiliation

Regarding the renewal of affiliation of 53 colleges, the council has approved the permanent affiliation of 52 colleges and has rejected the renewal application of a government college.

The affiliation renewal applications of 22 colleges have been approved on certain conditions.

The affiliations of 40 private and 12 government colleges have been renewed.

Ambigara Chowdaiah Chair


The council has also approved a proposal to start a chair on Ambigara Chowdaiah in the university. The VC said that the government had earmarked Rs. 50 lakh for the same long back, but the chair has not yet been instituted. He said that the chair will become functional immediately upon receiving the governor’s approval.

Research grants

The VC also said that the university has received Rs. 19.70 crore for taking up 65 research projects, adding that around 359 students are doing research in  a wide range of subjects and that the university has granted PhDs to 67 of these students in the past 67 years.

Evaluation duty mandatory

Since several colleges had failed to send permanent lecturers from their colleges for evaluation duty of late, the VC warned that the results of these colleges will be withheld.

The VC also said that the university has received a list of only 3 eligible lecturers from a certain college, while it is known that this college has at least 10 eligible lecturers.

Tax benefits for donors

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has approved income tax exemption of as much as 135 percent for those who donate funds to conduct statistical or social science research at the university, following the request of Jindal Group, which has agreed to donate Rs. 20 crore to the university to establish the Institute of Business Management of Technology. Tax exemption has been approved from assessment year 2011 – 12 under Clause III, Sub Section I, IT Act 1961.
