Chasing United’s 112 for nine in 20 overs, fancied Provident stumbled while United spun a fairytale under lights with a 44-run victory. Provident was bowled out for 68 in 16.1 overs.

The pursuit of a below-par score, assumed ominous proportions as Provident failed to string partnerships while opener Thilak Naidu (22) waged a lone battle.

M.K. Manjunath dragged an S. Arvind delivery onto his stumps and then off-spinner Udit Patel delivered a twin-blow, accounting for Amit Verma and Provident skipper B. Akhil, who fell on the sweep.

Deadly duo

The spin-combine of Udit (four for 11) and Karun Nair (four for 13) struck as Sunil Kumar Jain indulged in a hoick, Aniruddha Joshi Joshi dragged his feet out, Rahul Bhatkal fatally nudged and Sarfraz Ashraf tamely slog-swept. And when Naidu fell, sweeping Karun down backward square-leg’s throat, the script swung firmly towards United.

Earlier, United’s innings lacked momentum after its three key batsmen — captain Rohit Sabharwal, Bharath Chipli and R. Jonathan — fell early. Sabharwal took a mighty swipe and connected air against Abhishek Jagan, Chipli tried to cut Anand Katti and was trapped plumb and Jonathan lobbed one back for Sarfraz Ashraf.

The woes worsened as three run-outs stymied the innings with wicket-keeper Naidu playing a key hand with two direct hits. United finally eked a total that in the end proved adequate to derail Provident.

In the semifinals, United attained a batting high through its belligerent openers — skipper Rohit Sabharwal (78, 44b, 7x4, 5x6) and Bharath Chipli (70, 53b, 7x4, 4x6) — as it defeated Shamanur Davanagere Diamonds by 44 runs.

In another semifinal, Provident defeated Malnad Gladiators by six wickets with Naidu (44, 35b, 6x4, 1x6) and Akhil (45 n.o., 22b, 4x4, 3x6) lending the finishing touch.

Mayank Agarwal of Shamanur Davangere Diamonds, adjudged ‘Man of the tournament,’ won a Mahindra Xylo.

The scores: Final: Mangalore United 112 for nine in 20 overs (Arjun Shetty two for 20, Abhishek Jagan two for 21) bt Provident Bangalore 68 in 16.1 overs (Udit Patel four for 11, Karun Nair four for 13).

Semifinals: Mangalore United 201 for three in 20 overs (Rohit Sabharwal 78, Bharath Chipli 70, R. Jonathan 25, Prasanna Patil two for 48) bt Shamanur Davangere Diamonds 157 in 19.1 overs (Sunil Joshi 51 n.o., Md. Aleem two for 37).

Malnad Gladiators 157 for five in 20 overs (Sanjay Kumar 47, Ganesh Satish 34, Raju Bhatkal 26 n.o., Arjun Shetty two for 18) lost to Provident Bangalore 158 for four in 17.2 overs (B. Akhil 45 n.o., Thilak Naidu 44, M.K. Manjunath 30). Thehindu
