Mangalore : Trade Unions stage protest ; deplore Central Govt policies

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Feb 20, 2013: As part of the two-day nation-wide strike call, various organizations under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) staged a protest in front of DC Office on Feb 20, Wednesday demanding urgent steps to control price hike and strict enforcement of labour laws in all places of work.

Addressing the protestors, UFBA convener B Madhava, said that 11 national labour unions including BMS, HMS, INTUC, AITUC, Naukarara Sangha, LIC workers and other are participating  in the two- day strike demanding social security net for workers in the unorganized sector, end to disinvestment in PSUs and raising minimum wage to Rs 10,000.

He also said that UPA government had created such a situation that has forced the trade unions tocome down to streets to protest.

Speaking about price hike, he said ever since  UPA government came into power, prices of essential commodities have seen a steep hike.It is natural to increase the price of commodities which are scarce, but  there is no justification to the hike in price of rice upto Rs.50 per kg in spite of rice and wheat costing about Rs. 6 crore allowed to rot  in Food Corporation of India’s godowns.

Madhava pointed out that the petrol price has been hiked at least 17 times after the  UPA government came to power. He also charged the government of pursuing a pro-corporate policy by decontrolling prices of petrol and diesel.

On the observation of economists that the two day strike will incur a  loss of Rs. 20,000 crore to the country’s economy, he wanted to know if the 2G and Coalgate scams have not incurred losses. The strike will not affect the country but is only a loss to trade unions since the workers’ salary will be cut down, he added.

Prakash of UFOBU said that  the Union government has only been giving assurances to bank employees and bank unions which have been fighting for their rights  since two years. The government is of the corporates, by the corporates and only for the corporates, he added.

Narayan Shetty of BMS, Mohammed Rafi of HMS, H V Rao of AITUC, S N Devadiga of LIC Workers’ Union, Raghava of All India Bankers Association and others were present.
