Mangalore, Oct 13, 2014: The coastal city of Mangalore has finally got a much needed District Disaster Response Team (DDRT), thanks to the initiative of the Indian Red Cross Society. The Team was launched on October 13, Monday being the International Day for Disaster Management, at a function held at the Conference Hall of SDM College of Business Management. The programme was jointly organised by the DK Branch of Indian Red Cross Society and Youth Red Cross Units of SDM Law College and SDM Business Management College.
The DDRT is a group of volunteers who are ready to serve at times of disasters and natural calamities, will also conduct mock drills and sensitize students and the general public on the ways to handle disaster.
B Sadashiva Prabhu, Additional DC launched the DDRT while the Disaster Response Tools were inaugurated by HS Varadarajan, Chief Fire Officer of the district.
In his address, Varadarajan said a longstanding demand has been fulfilled with the launch of the Disaster Response Team and assured all help to it from the Fire Services Department.
Additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu who also spoke stressed the need to enlighten the people on the way to tackle disasters. He further stated that the District Administration would lend all possible help to the DDRT in its endeavour.
V Purushottam, Deputy Commandant of Home Guards, Prabhaker Shriyan, Chairman of Indian Red Cross Society, Vinutha Rai, Nodal officer of Youth Red Cross unit and many others were present.
The DDRT will have members from Red Cross Society, Departments of Police, Fire, Port, Railway, Revenue, MCC, Zilla Panchayat, Airport, Home Guards and other organisations interested in serving the cause.
