Mangalore, Aug 17, 2014: Lure of the lotus, the signature flower for celebrating Krishna Janmastami, resulted in the accidental death of a man at a village near Gurupur today.
Lotus, which normally grows in ponds and marshland, enjoys great demand during Krishna Janmastami. Hence it very common for people to go in search of these rare flowers and collect them for the festival. It is said that Purushotham (35), a youth of Yedapadavu sighted some of these flowers in a pond in the village. Lured by the beautiful flower, he decided to wade through the water to fetch them, little knowing that it would soon be his watery grave.

On seeing the flower, he stripped down to his bare essentials and left all his belongings on the banks of the pond. A few of the lotus flowers which he had already plucked were also found near the site.
Passersby who heard his cry for help were helpless as the marshy waters would be dangerous to get into without any professional help. By the time rescue was organized with the help of the local swimmers, it was too late. Though the matter was reported immediately, the police arrived very late, it is learned.
