Mangalore, Feb 7, 2013: The Dakshina Kannada District Committee of Koragas staged a protest in front of DC Office on Feb 7, Thursday demanding justice in cases of harassment of members of the Koraga Community.
Addressing the protestors, Committee District Member Shekar said that Koragas are a community who have been living in forests since times immemorial. But, they have been facing continuous harassment in the recent times, he said and added in some cases the torture had even led to death.
He said the Committee demanded justice in several cases including the suspicious death of Leela from Kundapur, rape and murder of Sarojini from Addoor, gang rape of Sampa from Padu Perar, rape attempt on Amrutha from Shiroor and Sujatha from Kinnigoli. Shekhar further said there were many more cases which have not been investigated upon despite complaint.
The protestors also demanded the arrest of accused Dinesh who had tried to outrage the modesty of Vanitha, daughter of Chaniya from Gundigadde of Sullia Taluk.
They also said that DSP Sadananda Varnekar who has taken charge of investigation into the case has not responded to the complaint and alleged the police officer had asked the Koraga representatives themselves to trap Dinesh. “ If this is the response of officials towards the injustice done to us, then Koraga community will never get justice, he said.
He urged the authorities concerned to conduct a thorough investigation into all the cases and provide justice at the earliest.
