Mangalore, feb 15, 2013 : A Konkani awareness campaign named ‘Konkani Prachar Andolan’ organised by the Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, was launched at the Academy office in Mangalore on February 15, Friday.

Academy Chairman Kasargod Chinna along with Kalagangotri Kitti, noted theatre artiste, inaugurated the campaign by handing over the flag.


A street play named  Konkani Amcho Fudar’ (’Konkani is our future’) was presented by the Kalakul Repertory of Mandd Sobhann on the occasion. The street play would be staged at 40 places in the undivided DK district upto March 17 as part of the awareness campaign aimed at creating awareness on the need to preserve the language. 


The main aim of the campaign is to encourage students to take up Konkani language as one of the subject in their studies.


Roy Castelino,President of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, who spoke on the occasion, said the Sanchalan wants at least 500 students to take up Konkani subject in their studies by 2018. He said 60 students  have opted Konkani  in SSLC exam last year while 72 students who have opted Konkani as one of the subjects are appearing for the exam this year.


Kasargod Chinna, who also spoke, hoped the street play organised as part of the campaign would be  successful in touching young minds.


Anil D’Cunha, Secretary of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Eric Ozario, Mandd Sobhann Gurkar, Stany Alvares, President of Mandd Sobhann, Louis J Pinto, Devdas Pai, Registrar of the Konkani Sahitya Academy.


Konkani teachers of various colleges were also present.  The Bishop of Mangalore Fr Aloysius Paul D’Souza has also conveyed his good wishes for the campaign.
