Mangalore, Nov 1: Kannada Rayothsava was celebrated on Nehru Maidan today on a low-key owing to the recent floods and the destruction wrought by them in North Karnataka.

A procession was organized from Jyothi Circle to Nehru Maidan, in which the Kannada Mathe was ceremoniously brought to Nehru Maidan. The District-in-charge Minister Krishan Palemar watched the parade in his open vehicle before hoisting the flag of India and the flag of Karnataka. He then delivered his inaugural address in which he spoke about various issues troubling the state of Karnataka in general and Dakshina Kannada in particular. 

The national anthem was sung, and the entertainment programme was kept low-key in honor of the flood victims of North Karnataka. School children sang a few patriotic songs and the programme came to an end. 

Prominent citizens such as Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, the zilla panchayat president; Mayor Shankar Bhat; N Yogish Bhat, the Mangalore South MLA; U T Khader, the MLA of Mangalore; V Ponnuraj, the deputy commissioner, and Dr. A S Rao, the superintendent of police were also present on the occasion.
