Mangalore Bishop presents Rachana Award to 5 Catholic personalities

Mangalore, Jan 10: Mangalore, Jan 10: ‘Rachana Awards’, instituted by the Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were conferred on five eminent Catholic personalities for their dedicated service to the society in various fields on Sunday January 10, 2010. The awards were presented by the Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza in a grand function held at Milagres Silver Jubilee Hall in the city.

Mabel Rebello, the widely acclaimed social worker of Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand and member of the Jharkhand Rajyasabha, was one of the recipients of the award.

Richard Monteiro of Bantwal (Agriculturist of the Year), Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief of Daijiworld.com (Entrepreneur of the Year), Dr Anand Titus Pereira, Sakaleshpur (Professional of the Year), Leslie Fernandes of Bahamas, (NRI Entrepreneur of the Year), were others who recieved the award.

On behalf of the Diocese of Mangalore, the bishop congratulated the winners and also expressed gratitude for being of great help to society and Christian institutions .

Mable Rebello said that Christians are living in fear and are reluctant to come out of their shells. The political and government leaders are reluctant to present themselves as Christians, she said. She also informed that the population of Christians is declining in India particularly in Goa and Mangalore.

Speaking about Naxalism and the various causes for its origins, she said that a weak bureaucracy and lack of efficient leaders are the major factors responsible for the Naxalism.


Former President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry John Prasad Menezes, Diocesan PROs Marcel Monteiro and William Menezes; Director of St Joseph’s Engineering College Fr. Valerian D’Souza were present on the occasion.

Lester A D’Souza, the secretary of Rachana, proposed the vote of thanks. Titus Norohna was the master of ceremonies. He gave a brief introduction to Rachana. Trishma Pinto conducted the award presentation part of the programme.
