Mangalore, Oct 19, 2011 : Nearly 350 employees of Mangalore Airport went on strike Monday to demand the reinstating of 7 workers, who were allegedly fired for no reason.

Most of the ground staff, who are responsible for loading luggage, pulling trolleys, cleaning the airport, and managing the conveyor belts participated in this protest, demanding better job security.

Anil Kumar, the secretary of the Mangalore Airport Workers’ Association, said that the Durga Facilities Management Company, which is contracted to supply ground staff for Mangalore Airport, is behaving in an unreasonable manner by sacking experienced workers to appoint fresh candidates in their place.

The company has fired 7 local people, who were working at the airport for over 10 years, for no reason. Unfortunately, the sacked workers belong to the Dalit and backward communities. Stating that the ground staff is being unnecessarily harassed, he said that company intends to employ labourers from Jharkhand.

A meeting of the office bearers of the association with the Central Industrial Security Force officials and the representatives of the Airport Authority of India was held, after which the protest was withdrawn. The meeting was convened by M. R. Vasudeva, the director of the Mangalore Airport.

Mr. Vasudeva informed reporters that five of the seven sacked workers will be taken back at the earliest possible and the other two will be given jobs as soon as there is a vacancy. He also said that the strike has not affected the normal functioning of the Mangalore Airport.
