AirportMangalore, Feb 19, 2013: Motorists using the approach road leading to the Mangalore International Airport (MIA) will have to cautious from Wednesday. The main approach road will be converted into a two-way facility as the current exit via Dakkan Park will be closed for at least five months till July-end to facilitate its development, said JT Radhakrishna, MIA director.

The work of developing the 1225-metre road has been entrusted to the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL). The present asphalted surface will be converted into a two-lane concrete road of 11-metre width. KRDCL has entrusted construction to Concord company at an estimated cost of Rs 10.81 crore.

Radhakrishna said when the exit is closed, the current entry road near Shri Devi College will also double as the exit. Since the entry road has many hairpin bends, motorists must be extremely cautious, he said, adding that the Airports Authority of India will put up additional cautionary road signs to warn motorists to drive carefully and slowly.

Sources in KRDCL informed TOI that the agency to which the work is contracted will start work from near the bridge at the start of the exit. As there are some minor issues pertaining to land acquisition, the contractor has been advised to take up work from there, KRDCL sources said. They also said the remaining 20% of land acquisition will be completed in time so that the entire road will be ready on schedule.
