Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Sept. 30, 2011: The city-based Mangala Hospital has responded to the allegations of negligence on the part of its doctors and exorbitant charging of fees, reports of which had appeared in the print and electronic media during the past few days. The hospital has blamed Shri Rama Sene members of blowing the issue out of proportions and of having abused and harassed the hospital authorities after the death of the patient.

Reportedly, Aitha Gowda (59), who was admitted to Mangala Hospital on September 11 and diagnosed with rat fever and jaundice, did not respond to the treatment and died in hospital. His death was followed by chaos and the Kadri police had to intervene to help both parties reach an agreement regarding payment issues.

The hospital management has stated that a group of people belonging to the Shri Rama Sene had abused the hospital staff after the patient died. The hospital has issued a press statement questioning how the media came to know about this incident well in advance and appeared on the hospital premises even before the Shri Rama Sene activists arrived to create a scene. The hospital has also demanded to know if the Shri Rama Sene considers pubs equal to hospitals so that they can abuse them.

The management also wants to know if the Shri Rama Sene has any medical qualification to decide if a patient dies because of negligence when in truth the doctors were trying their best to save the patient.

Flaying the media, the hospital stated that the reporters ought to have spoken to the doctors and checked the records before publishing their reports.

According to the hospital, Achutha or Aitha Gowda of Belthangady was admitted to Mangala Hospital at 6:45 p.m. on September 11 since he had fever with chills for the past 3 days. Later, he developed the symptoms of vomiting, abdominal distension, decreased urine output, and debility. The patient was first admitted to a hospital in Puttur before being shifted to Mangala Hospital.

Dr. Ganapathy, who was supervising the patient’s treatment, said that around 60 – 70 percent of patients with advanced rat fever and multi organ failure die. He said that the medical staff had explained this to the patient’s family and had given them the option of taking him to a government hospital in case they lacked funds.

Seven doctors were treating Aitha Gowda at that time, and the patient was given 43 bottles of blood along with seven haemodialysis. The patient was in critical care for 10 days and in intensive care for 10 days.

The hospital has denied allegations of charging exorbitantly or keeping the patient’s dead body to charge higher bills.
