Mangalore, June 16, 2010: Mangala Hospital and Kidney Foundation, Kadri, Mangalore has announced introduction of Laser Prostatetectomy as part of its comprehensive services.

Announcing this at a press conference recently, Dr. Ashok Pandit, eminent urologist and a director of the Foundation said the simplified surgical procedure for the removal of enlarged prostrate, would be performed with the help of Bio Litec 150 Watt Diode Laser Unit, which is the most powerful laser available for prostrate surgery.

“The fact that this year marks the 50th Anniversary of discovery of Laser makes it even more special,” he said.

Dr. Ganapathy, Managing Director of the hospital said the hi-tech equipment, which is the world’s most advanced equipment of its kind, was acquired at a cost of Rs. 65 Lakhs and the overall cost of treatment per patient could range between Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 80,000. This is very economical when compared to the cost of the same procedure in the metros, he observed. Moreover, the treatment is time saving and the patient can revert to normal life within 24 -48 hours as compared 5-7 days hospitalization required in conventional prostrate surgery. The pain factor is also negligible, he added.

Dr. Pandit explained that prostrate enlargement is an inevitable part of aging in men and results in lower urinary tract symptoms. More than 60% of men over middle age are vulnerable to this syndrome and many of them require surgical removal of the prostrate. Initially this was done by open surgical removal of Prostrate, which is painful and disliked by both patients and surgeons. An improvement over this was the Trans-urethral Resection of Prostrate (TURP) using radio frequency current (diathermy) to cut chips of the enlarged Prostrate using a resectoscope passed through the urinary passage. This procedure too suffered from certain disadvantages.

The new Laser Prostatetectomy is devoid of these disadvantages and is a boon to the patient and surgeon alike, he said. The procedure can be safely performed under spinal anaesthesia.

With the introduction of this service, Mangala Hospital provides the complete range of lasers for urology services – Prostrate, Bladder and Urinary stones, Dr. Ganapathy said.
