Udupi, June 23 2018: Security has been increased at the sea walkway near the tourist jetty at Malpe here after miscreants damaged a granite wall for sitting of about 35 feet, installed for people to sit and enjoy the sea and the nearby surroundings.
A private agency official in charge of development of Malpe beach and St. Mary’s Island, said here on June 22, Friday that some miscreants had damaged the granite bench about three days ago.
The police had already directed that CCTV cameras be installed 100m from the walkway. This will be taken up soon.
Meanwhile, the construction of a compound wall of the area where the tourist jetty and sea walkway was located was about 60% complete. It was expected to be fully completed in about a month. A gate will be installed at the entrance of this compound.
Besides this, a gate will also be installed at the entrance of the walkway on the western side and another gate will be installed at the east to prevent people from getting near the sea to take selfies, Mr. Shetty said.
The walkway has been constructed on the breakwater at the entrance of the Malpe Fisheries Harbour and was inaugurated on January 26, this year. With slip-proof floor below, the walkway is 450 metres long and 2.4 metres wide.
There is a granite seat on either side of the walkway for people to sit and enjoy the sight of the sea, sea birds and the fish.
One can see the entire Malpe beach from the walkway. As many as 30 iron cast lamp poles have been fixed on the entire walkway to illuminate it during the evening.
