Bhatkal, May 20:  A moving train hit a loaded petrol tanker when the tanker fell over the railway track beneath the railway over bridge here. The accident occurred at around midnight and the driver of the truck was seriously injured in the accident. He was rushed to Bhatkal Government hospital and was later shifted to Manipal.

According to the reports, the tanker was heading towards Mumbai from Udupi. When it reached Gorte Bridge in Bhatkal ahead of Shiroor post, the driver lost his control and the tanker fell off on the track. It is said that the driver was trying to escape from a vehicle which was travelling from the opposite direction, which would have hit the tanker causing a major mishap.



According to the sources, the summer special train No. 2997 Tirunelveli (TN) to Hapa (Gujarat) hit the truck. A major tragedy was warded off as only the front portion of the truck was said to be on the track. Eight bogies of the train scraped through the truck before the driver could halt the train. A major tragedy could have struck, if the train would hit the petrol loaded container.


The train driver informed Mr. Gomes, the station master at the Bhatkal railway station about the incident and subsequently the trains arriving towards Bhatkal were averted. The fire brigade was summoned at the spot and the fire brigade personnel’s helped the seriously injured truck driver out of the cabin and rushed him to the hospital. The driver is identified as Raju. According to sources the driver has received serious injuries on the head and his condition is said to be critical.


The rescue team arrived to the spot from the Madgaon railway station and detached the body of the truck from the cabin in the front. The train which hit the tanker proceeded on its journey at 5.30 early in the morning. All the other trains which would have passed through the Bhatkal station on the Konkan railway line were halted from 12 midnight and were allowed to proceed at 6 am after the railway lines were cleared.’
