In her introductory address, Ms. Rita Noronha, the convener of Mahila Sanghagala Jala, said that women must understand the law of Right to Information (RTI) very well. Pointing out the fact that women suffer a lot irrespective of caste, community, or religion, she said that women must unite to put an end to their sufferings. She urged women to find solutions to their problems by using the Mahila Sanghagala Jala.

Madhu Bhushan of the Bangalore-based Vimochana, who was the chief guest of the occasion, said that marriage has today become more of a prison than a relationship, adding that women are now attempting to break open this prison. Speaking about marriage, she said that it is a social institution, which is fraught with violence and discrimination. Urging parents not to force their daughters into marriage, she said that forced marriage is not security, but a reformatory.

The programme was inaugurated in a unique way by women of various ages, right from a small girl child to old women tied in the form of a network with a banner.

The dignitaries on the dais were Dr. Jacintha D’Souza, the principal of Roshni Nilaya; Shymala; Merlyn; and others. During the course of the programme, Gayathri K. from Roshni Nilaya presented the statistics of atrocities on women in Dakshina Kannada.
