Mahakalipadpu railway crossing creates problems for motorists

Mangalore, Aug 17: The Mahakalipadpu railway crossing, located on the bypass road leading to NH 17 is always busy because people use it as a short cut to the city; but those in a hurry are greatly inconvenienced owing to the fact that the crossing remains closed for a long time.

 

 

 

 

Today, the crossing was closed at 4 a.m. and remained closed for long hours because technical problems prevented it from being opened. The repeated efforts of the railway men to open the gate failed to bear fruit.

Whenever the gate is closed, two wheelers use a smaller way to cross over to the other side. The two-wheelers have to be physically lifted to cross the high railway tracks. This is a dangerous habit, which can claim lives if a train suddenly arrives and the two-wheeler riders are unable to get off the tracks in time.

The construction of an over bridge is the need of the hour; and till the over bridge is constructed, the railway crossing gate should be in perfect working order and nobody should be allowed to cross the tracks when it is closed.

However, the long-standing demands for an over bridge at this spot have still not evoked favorable responses from the authorities concerned.
