MRPL blast : Sub-contract firm manager arrested

Mangalore, Oct 20, 2011 : The police have arrested Qasim Kutti, the regional manager of the firm that was sub-contracted for the work on an MRPL site, in connection with a blast inside MRPL’s crude oil tank that killed one worker and injured 4 others.

Mulla of Orissa lost his life when he was doing some welding work inside a tank, where the air pressure was higher than usual. Four of his colleagues also suffered serious burn injuries. Rahim (25), one of these four, is in a critical condition.

The deceased had arrived into Mangalore a year back with his family to work for MRPL and stayed at Katipalla. He died in front of his father, who also worked for MRPL. The final rites were conducted at Suratkal graveyard on Wednesday evening. The company has promised employment with higher wages to the father, while the family will receive Rs. 6 lakh as accident insurance and Rs. 6.5 lakh from other sources.
