Udupi, April 17, 2017 : Foundation for a new milk dairy and an administrative office complex to be constructed by the DK District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union at Uppoor at a cost of Rs 92 crore was laid by Udupi-Chikkamagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje on April 16, Sunday. The new dairy will have the capacity to process 2.50 lakh litre milk per day.
Speaking on the occasion, Shobha said dairy farming has turned out to be a big industry which has brought prosperity to the lives of several farmers who otherwise incurred loss by growing commercial crops.
Pointing out that the government was now providing a subsidy of Rs 5 per litre to the dairy farmers, Shobha demanded further encouragement to dairy farmers.
She also demanded a ban on cattle slaughter in the state and added this measure would go a long way in development of dairy farming.
Udupi District in-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said it is sad that India which tops in milk procurement and export also tops in beef export. Though ban on cattle slaughter may be a solution, there is a need for the Gorakshaks to open Goshalas to take care of barren cattle, he added.
K M Udupa, veteran co-operative leader and Trustee of Bharatiya Vikas Trust was felicitated. Sri Vishwa Prasanna Theertha Swamiji, Junior Pontiff of Pejawar Mutt too arrived and blessed the function.
