MCC to make road humps user friendly: Mayor Praveen

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, March 4: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to take the advice of the traffic police and make all road humps more user friendly. The civic body will replace all dangerous road humps such as rubber humps and rumblers with gentler undulations in a phased manner.

Praveen Mangalore Mayor Praveen said that the civic body is launching this project upon consultation with the Regional Transport Office (RTA) and traffic police. Stating that the existing humps are unscientific, he pointed out that they can slow down only the smaller vehicles while the larger vehicles moved over them at top speed.

Stating that the proposal to replace dangerous humps with user friendly humps already existed with the civic body, the mayor said that several people had lodged complaints with the traffic police regarding these unsafe and unscientific road humps, which can slow down only smaller vehicles, but not the larger city buses and lorries.

An MCC engineer said that earlier DC Subodh Yadav had pointed out that humps have to be constructed in such a way that they can slow down all vehicles, not just the smaller ones. Accordingly, humps were reconstructed in keeping with the recommendations of the State Road Congress, he added. These reconstructed humps made drivers of smaller vehicles feel safer.

Voicing his opinion that the MCC and the police department have been dancing to the tunes of private bus operators, Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike President Hanumanth Kamath said that the old humps suited these city buses very well and that there was an unwritten agreement between the bus operators and the district administration to retain the old humps, enabling city buses to speed over them. He expressed his satisfaction that this unwritten agreement has finally been broken.

MCC engineers, however, have revealed that the civic body and the police department have not cleared several places, which are badly in need to speed breakers, adding that there are 50 areas in the city requiring humps.
