Mangalore, May 9, 2012: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) on May 9, Wednesday raided shops and commercial establishments to find out if they stocked plastic carry bags less than 40 microns. 


A team comprising MCC health officers and sanitation officers, under the leadership of Madhu S. Manohar, the environmental engineer at MCC, raided several shops in Central Market area and seized banned plastic carry bags.

Mr. Manohar said that the civic body has resumed raiding shops to prevent the use of plastic bags below 40 microns within MCC limits. Errant shopkeepers had been let off with a warning and a fine of Rs. 250 when they were caught with banned plastic bags for the first time. However, if they are caught again, a fine of Rs. 500 will be slapped on them, and if they continue stocking banned plastic bags, they will have to lose their license, he said. 


He also said that the MCC will conduct raids once a fortnight. 


The MCC team seized 250kgs of banned plastic from Pompei Plastics. Saval Ram Naik, the owner of a shop near MGHA Complex was caught using banned plastic for the third time. The proprietor of Plastic Line was fined Rs. 250 for stocking old plastic carry bags. Around 6 shops were shut down because they were operating without a license.
