Mangalore, August 26, 2011: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) in collaboration with Suvarna Jayanthi Sangha and Samudhaya Abhivriddhi Sangha organized an informative camp on solid waste management at Scouts and Guides Bhavan today. A demonstration on how to produce compost from waste formed part of the event.

Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak inaugurated the event and said that the MCC has decided to collect waste from every house and recycle it. Stating that the public is criticizing the MCC for its failure to manage waste effectively, she said that people might not give waste to waste collectors after seeing the demonstration of producing vermin compost from waste.

Harish Joshi, a retired professor, presented the demonstration and said that environmental pollution is because of waste thrown on streets. He said that high quality manure can be produced from waste collected at home. Cuba stands first in the world in agriculture because people produce their manure themselves. He said that the process gives rise to earthworms, which eat up the waste and produce compost for plants. Earthworms are absolutely harmless, he added, urging people to use natural manure instead of harmful chemicals.

Jayaprakash Nayak, the senior scientific officer, and Vijayakumari Shenoy, the joint commissioner of MCC, were the dignitaries on the dais.
