Mangalore, Jan 5: Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj inaugurated the 2-day workshop on solid waste management in the auditorium of the DC’s office on Jan 5, Tuesday.

In his inaugural speech, DC V Ponnuraj observed that the current solid waste management unit was not up to date. He said that people are in the habit of dumping waste wherever they wish. Moreover, the MCC’s solid waste management programme did not include any local people. Solid waste management units must be established in Mulki, Moodbidri, Sullia, and Ullal, he suggested.

He also brought attention to the fact that the people who live near the dumping yard face a lot of problems because of the bad smell and the smoke that arises when the waste is being burned. He informed that plans to establish a new waste management unit at Sullia are afoot.
The DC suggested that waste must be collected from every home and dumped directly into the tipper. However, efficient waste management requires cooperation and coordination on the part of the public as well as the workers. He also suggested that the public must be taught to classify waste as biodegradable and non biodegradable.

Prof Jagannath of UDCO spoke at the workshop. He said that if people can manage the waste generated in their own houses, they can manage the solid wastes of the entire nation. Waste must be collected on a daily basis and recycled immediately instead of waiting for it to accumulate to large quantities. Literacy alone is not sufficient, knowledge and education on environmental issues is of paramount importance, he said.

Devendra Prabhu, the coordinator of the programme, made the welcome speech. Commissioner Vijay Prakash, Deputy Mayor Rajani Dugganna, and Mayor Shankar Bhat were also present during the occasion.
