Mangaluru, Dec 09, 2017: The MCC Day celebrations organised at Town Hall on December 8, Friday were inaugurated by Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade by opening the areca inflorescence. He along with other dignitaries lighted the traditional lamp and also offered floral tributes to late U S Mallya, the architect of modern Dakshina Kannada.
Dr Heggade conferred the U S Mallya Lifetime Achievement Award on eminent saxophonist Kadri Gopalanath on the occasion. The Award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh and a citation. Veteran Yakshagana artiste Agari Raghuram Rao, educationist K A Rohini and talented athlete Poovamma were also honoured.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Veerendra Heggade hailed the contributions of Late U S Mallya to the development of the district. He also appreciated the endeavour of the Mangaluru City Corporation to confer an Award in honour of U S Mallya on the occasion of MCC Day.
Mayor Kavitha Sanil, Deputy Mayor Rajaneesh Kapikad, MCC Commissioner Mohammad Nazeer, Mangaluru South MLA JR lobo, Corporators Sabitha Misquith, Appi, Pratibha Kulai, MLC Ivan D’Souza and others were present.
Earlier in the morning a drawing competition was conducted for students, while in the afternoon, a variety of cultural programmes by the corporators mesmerized the audience. Mayor Kavitha Sanil and Corporators Sabitha Misquith and Asha D’Silva presented a scintillating dance performance.
