Mangalore, May 7, 2012 : The Mangalore Catholic Cooperative (MCC) Bank Limited celebrated its 100th anniversary at Milagres College on May 8 Sunday from 5:30 p.m. with Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, presiding over the event. The chief guest was Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, the union minister for corporate affairs.

Among the dignitaries on the dais were MLA B. Ramanath Rai, Ronald Colaco, the NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist; Ivan Fernandes, the president of KE Global Dubai, James Mendonca, the president of Mangalore Konkans Dubai, R. Palangappa, the deputy registrar of cooperative societies, Dr. Edward Nazareth, and Melwyn D’Cunha, the chairman of MCC Bank.

A procession of the managers of different branches of the bank marked the beginning of the event. Melwyn D’Cunha delivered the welcome address and Dr. Edward Nazareth spoke briefly on the history and workings of the bank. Ronald Colaco released a documentary on the history of the bank.


The bishop, in his address, urged people to support the bank, which is gaining an excellent reputation not only in the community, but also in the banking sector of India. He also expressed his appreciation of the bank’s management and employees and urged them to adhere to the best standards of the banking sector.


Speaking on the occasion, Moily urged the bank administrators to appoint good and able chief financial officers and chief executive officers and set goals and targets that will help them achieve new milestones in the banking sector. He further stated that the bank is already among the largest urban cooperative banks in the twin districts and has the largest number of branches. He also expressed hopes that the bank will get NRI status soon.


Ronald Colaco presented the keys of vehicles to beneficiaries Walter Rodrigues and Bhaskar Monteiro under the Swant vehicle benefit scheme. Expressing happiness at being part of the event, Mr. Colaco said that MCC is still in the process of making a niche for itself because it helps others before it helps itself. He also congratulated the current administrative heads and office bearers of the bank for attaining a high percentage of growth in the last five years. He also announced that he would give Rs. 10 lakh as a token of his appreciation.


Ivan Fernandes, B. Ramanath Rai, and Palangappa also spoke on the occasion.


M. P. Noronha and Valentine D’Silva, the former chairman of the MCC Bank, were felicitated on this occasion. Cheques for Rs. 25,000 were presented to two needy people on this occasion. Advocate Chevalier Clarence Pais was also honored on this occasion.


Raymond D’Cunha’s book on the history of the bank was released on this occasion.


A musical concert by Joel Pereira and his team was the highlight of the event.
