M. R. Vasudeva eager to win back public confidence

Mangalore Today News Network

vasudev Mangalore: July 15: M. R. Vasudeva, who took charge as the airport director of Mangalore International Airport on July 14, said that he will first undertake confidence building measures. Since the public is now worried about safety and security issues in the airport, he said that he wants to make it as foolproof as possible, ensuring that the airport meets international civil aviation standards.

Dismissing the allegation that Mangalore Airport is unsafe because it is a table-top airport, he said that people are programmed to believe that table-top airports are hazardous; however this is not the case. He assured that runways are constructed with specific dimensions irrespective of whether they are on a hill or a plain; and all pilots have to land within that specific dimension and are trained to do so.

He said that he intends to take the required measures to ease the public mind regarding safety issues at the airport. Saying that arresters will soon be provided at the end of runways to enhance safety, he said that the new integrated terminal building will be thrown open to passengers within a few days; but did not specify any date. He said that part of his duty is to supervise the extension of the runway to 9000ft. The civil aviation ministry had decided to extend the runway, following the tragic plane crash of May 22, which claimed 158 lives. He also said that the number of passengers flying from Mangalore has increased. While 56,000 passengers flew from Mangalore in 2009; 63,000 passengers flew in 2010.
