Mangalore, Mar 6: A Holy Mass, followed by a programme in honor of legendary Konkani singer Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus, was held to observe his first death anniversary at St. Jospeh’s Church in Jeppu on March 6, Sunday.
Fr. Baptist Menezes, the Episcopal of Udupi, was the main celebrant and Fr. Walter D’Mello delivered the sermon. Fr. Andrew D’Souza, the parish priest, and many other priests participated in the mass, after which people visited Mr. Rebimbus’ tomb for a brief prayer service.
A programme was held in his honor at the Jeppy Centenary Hall. Konkani poet Melwyn Rodrigues recited two poems written by Wilfy Rebimbus just before his death. Lauding the singer, Mr. Rodrigues said that Wilfy has greatly enriched Konkani language and culture and that his poems are a rich record of the history of the Konkani-speaking people.
Veena Rebimbus, the daughter of Wilfy, said that living without her father is very difficult, but the love and affection of the Konkani people has made it possible. She also informed the audience that she and her brother Vishwas have decided to continue the unfinished work of their father by setting music to some of his last songs. She said that they will present a show of these songs on Easter Sunday at Town Hall in Mangalore.
The family also presented a laminated photography of Wilfy Rebimbus along with lyrics of his song to the guests. Leslie Rego was the MC of the event.
