Law alone cannot eradicate child labour - Police Commissioner

Mangalore, June 12: Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh inaugurated a programme organized by the DK district administration, Information Department, Labour Department, and the District Child Labour Planning Society in observance of the World Day against Child Labour at the Zilla Panchayat today.

In his inaugural address, he said that people need to be educated about the consequences of employing children and added that the law alone cannot eradicate the evil of child labour. He urged government bodies, the general public, and non government organizations to make a collaborative effort to eradicate child labour.

Revealing statistics, he said that the world has more than 20 crore child labourers and lamented that laws have done nothing much to reduce the number of child labourers.

H. R. Deshpande, the principal district and sessions judge; R. V. Patil, the senior civil judge; Mohammed Nazeer, the ZP chief planning officer; A. Shakunthala, the deputy director of women and child welfare department; Venkatesh Appaiah Shindhihati, the assistant labour commissioner; S. P. Chengappa, the president of the Mangalore Bar Council; Lavanya Shetty; and others were present.
