May 21:  Cyclone Laila has already killed 6 people and caused untold suffering to the people of North Karnataka, who are already struggling to recover from the floods. The cyclone has blown away the roofs of hundreds of temporary sheds built for the flood victims. The residents of these temporary sheds had to spend the entire night in the open, exposed the heavy rains of Laila, which swept across Andhra Prakesh after shattering Tamil Nadu. North Karnataka has already been alerted.

B. Puttanna, the director of the meteorological department, said that the influences of the cyclone was observed since yesterday, Laila will enter Karnataka only tomorrow evening, accompanied by heavy winds and rains. 


Last October, the rains had killed 70 people in Bijapur and Bagalkote districts, destroyed standing crops, and wrecked the homes of thousands of people. The flood even affected people who were residing the temporary sheds constructed by the government. 


Sources have reported that lightening killed 3 people who were sheltering under the tree. A person in Chitradurga died when a coconut fell on him. Another was hit by lightening in Kundapur. Many in Bagalkote and Bijapur sustained injuries when the aluminum sheets of their sheds fell on them. 


Mangalore reported a landslide in Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
