Kundapur, Oct 03, 2015: Over 2000 villagers and representatives of various organisations participated in a huge protest organised in the premises of the Annapoorneshwari Sadashiva Siddhivinayaka Temple here on October, Friday to condemn the rape and murder of 19 year old Suchitra Naik of Karikodlu. The gruesome incident came to light after the girl who had not returned home from work on October 1 was found dead.
Soon after the naked body of Suchitra was found in a sack, the police had managed to arrest the accused named Manikanta after tracking Suchitra’s cell phone which was in his possession.
Belve Vasanth Kumar Shety, Managing Trustee of Karuna Belaku Seva Trust who addressed the meeting, demanded stern punishment for the guilty in the case and also appealed for police patrolling in lonely areas to ensure safety of women returning home from office and colleges during evening hours.
Janani Diwaker Shetty, President of Udupi District Jaya Karnataka Association said stringent punishment to culprits in such cases would go a long way in refraining others from committing such heinous acts.
Chittaranjan Shetty, President of Avarse Gram Panchayat, and many others spoke on the occasion.
In a humanitarian gesture, the participants of the meeting, raised Rs 2.5 lakhs to hand over to the family of the girl which is totally shattered following the tragedy.
Traders in the town downed their shutters to protest against the incident and also to support the convention.
Unless the people protest the Police never act is it? The trust on the police is declining day to day , its because the innocent are being punished but the culprits are moving freely on bail.
