Kundapur, July 25, 2015 : The Amasebail police have booked as many as eight persons for reportedly involved in money lending and charging exorbitant interest locally known as Meter Baddi. Cases have been registered against them under Karnataka Moneylenders’ Act.
The move followed investigations that revealed that Srinivas Poojary, a member of Amasebail Gram Panchayat had recently attempted suicide allegedly due to harassment by such money lenders charging Meter Baddi.
Kundapur DySP Manjunath Shetty, Tahsildar Gayatri Nayak and other officials had then assured Poojari of action against the accused in the case.
It is been gathered that Srinivas who had taken loan of Rs 13 lakhs to purchase property and vehicle had again borrowed Rs 9 lakh from private money lenders to clear the first loan.
It is learnt that Shekhar Shetty said to be a money lender had taken away the documents of Srinivas’s vehicle while even the property documents were taken by money lenders after making Srinivas sign some papers.
But when he could not repay he was harassed by money lenders forcing him to take the drastic step of attempting to end his life.
The local Raitha Sangha had then even drawn the attention of the DC and SP regarding the issue.
The money lenders against whom cases were registered are Sitaram Shetty Baluvalli, Narayan Shetty Baluvalli, Prashanth Thombattu, Divanand Kodgi Amasebail, Lakshman Shetty Kundapur, Shekar Shetty Kavrady and Kiran Shetty Hengavally and Ansar Saheb Kandlur.
