Kundapur : Student’s death in tragic mishap triggers protests

Kundapur, July 29, 2016 : An accident wherein a college student lost his life at Ambagilu in Uppunda has triggered angry protests from students and public in Uppunda and Kundapur on July 29, Friday.

The mishap occurred when Raghavendra Shetty (21), a final year B.Com student at the BB Hegde College at Kundapur was trying to board a KSRTC bus at Uppunda, to go this college. But, it is said the bus moved even before Raghavendra could step on the foot board and he lost his balance and fell on the road. A private bus which was proceeding that way  ran over Raghavendra injuring him grievously. He breathed his last  while being rushed to the hospital.

Raghavendra is survived by his parents and a sister. His father is a businessman in Kalaburgi.

The news of the accident that claimed the life of a student spread like wild fire resulting in hundreds of locals and students staging protest by blocking the road. Students were also seen  protesting outside the Government Hospital in Kundapur  where the body of Raghavendra was taken.

Meanwhile,  additional police personnel were summoned and a KSRP Squad was also deployed outside the hospital to keep control of the crowd.

Senior police officials including Kundapur DySP Praveen Naik, Kundapur Circle Inspector Diwaker PM and others are at the spot. Udupi SP Annamalai too rushed to Uppunda to calm down the agitators.

In the meantime, a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh has been announced to the family of Raghavendra by the Kundapur Education Society which manages the BB Hegde College where  Raghavendra was studying. The college also declared a holiday in respect of the deceased student.
