Kundapur, Oct 9, 2015 : In a second case of suicide by a farmer in Kundapur taluk in the recent past, Rama Kulal of Kelasunka in Amasebail village has reportedly ended his life by consuming poison at his in-laws’ house at Paduvaltur in Kavarady village.
The 45 year old Kulal was reportedly worried over the repayment of the loans he had availed and the crop losses he had suffered due to wild animals.
Rama Kulal who was engaged in farming along with his younger brother Subba Kulal used to grow paddy and arecanut and had borrowed loans from Land Development Bank and a Co-operative Bank. It is learnt he even worked as a labourer during free time.
Sources said he had even pledged his wife’s Karimani to raise loan. and used to often speak about his mounting debt.
Kulal who had attempted suicide a few days ago was first admitted to Ajjarkad Hospital in Udupi in a critical condition and was later shifted to Wenlock where his battle for life ended on October 7, Wednesday. He is survived by his wife, and two daughters and parents.
Officials including Assistant Commissioner Charulata Somal, Tahsildar Gayatri Nayak and Village Accountant Sunil Kumar have visited the family of the deceased farmer. A report has also been sent to the government.
The middleman makes a lot of profit but the farmers do not get enough for the maintenance. They take the loan thinking that they will be able to repay but when they are unable they end up life this way. How sad.
