Mangalore, May 24: Four King cobras have simultaneously laid eggs at Pilikula Dr. Shivaram Karanth Biological Park’s King cobra reproduction centre, the first event of its kind in the world. The biological park, therefore, has set a world record by successfully stimulating 4 King cobras to lay eggs in a reproduction centre. The experiment has been in progress for the past 7 years.

Pilikula already has the reputation of being one of the biggest King cobra parks in the world and provides shelter for five female and seven male black cobras.

In the experiment, five female cobras were prepared for reproduction. Nagini, Rani, Nagaveni, and Nagamani laid eggs. The male cobras involved were Nagaraj, Nagendra, Raja, and Joy. All were around 7 – 10 years old.

Pilikula has been conducting special studies on King cobras since 2003. King cobras naturally reproduce in thick forests when the weather is favourable. But this is the first time they have laid a number of eggs in a non natural reproduction centre. The eggs will be hatched in 2 months.

Enthusiastic about the success, Jayaprakash Bhandary said that this is another feather in the cap for the park and will lead to more studies. Explaining that King  cobras usually lay 20 – 40 eggs, he said that the park is yet to ascertain how many eggs have been laid by each cobra. Pilikula Biological Park MC J. R. Lobo has also expressed his happiness.

Pilikula has created a separate centre for King cobras, but does not permit visitors for technical reasons. The biological park has created a Western Ghat like environment for the King cobras and CC cameras record every move made by these creatures. Special care has been taken to maintain humidity and temperature levels to facilitate the reproduction process. The central government has released a grant of Rs. 10 lakh for this centre, but the money is being released in phases.

The King cobra research team includes Jayaprakash Bhandary, scientific officer Vikram, snake caretaker Dinesh, and Inspector Roshan.
